The Jaguar Type 01 Just Got a Lot Harder to Hate

The Jaguar Type 01, which basically broke the internet, is finally here in its final production form. Oh, and it's now a sedan. The post The Jaguar Type 01 Just Got a Lot Harder to Hate appeared first on The Drive .
It’s rare for a car to become so controversial that an automaker gets engulfed in over-the-top drama, negative headlines, and endless online finger-pointing before it even reaches production. In fact, I can think of only two: the Ferrari Luce and this, the all-new Jaguar Type 01 .
You may recall the Jaguar Type 01 as the car that practically broke the internet when the concept that inspired it was revealed way back at the end of 2024. People on social media were up in arms about Jaguar losing its way—as if that hadn’t already happened before this—selling out to its corporate overlords, and going completely bland with its new electric coupe. At one point, it was even rumored that JLR’s Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern, was fired over the car’s backlash , but that turned out to be untrue.
And say what you want about it, but in this latest round of photos, shown in a dark silver and violet-like blue, the enormous sedan (surprise!) looks striking. I’d even dare say, stunning. Its sheer size, and the fact that it looks like something out of a Bob Kane comic book , is really fascinating. It’s modern and retro; it’s extravagant yet classy, and, at least in photos, it’s so… German. Perhaps I’ll get more Britannia vibes from it when I see it in person.
In case you missed the mention above, the Type 01 is now a sedan, not a coupe, or as Jag likes to call it, a “luxury four-door GT.” The proportions are intense: low roofline, short front overhang, XXL hood, extended rear overhang, shutters/louvers for days, and at each corner, massive 23-inch wheels. Both cars shown here feature gold accents behind the front wheels with the Jaguar mascot embossed. I think the rear end is probably its best angle, or at least its most unique (in a good way).
The interior is more or less what you’d come to expect from a luxury automaker in 2026, and that’s not a compliment. The Type 01’s cabin is split into four spaces via a central spine, and it’s all extremely minimalist, with various textures (and textiles) throughout the dash, door panels, and seats; a deep, flat dash that looks like something out of a yacht; and, get this, a full-width soundbar that runs from pillar to pillar. Oh, and there aren’t any buttons. There is one redeeming feature, however: There’s no massive center screen, just one in front of the driver that functions as a gauge cluster, and a smaller portrait-oriented screen to run the car’s various other functions like media, climate, and so on.
Once you get past the design, for better or worse, there’s the drivetrain of choice. Sadly, no hopped-up gas engine like in the Audi Nuvolari (to which I see some resemblance, especially from above). The Type 01 is powered by three electric motors in an 850-volt architecture and a 118-kWh battery.
The Type 01 puts out 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 lb-ft of torque, and delivers a 0-60-mph time of 3.1 seconds. More impressive is how quickly it can pull from 62-112 mph in a silly 4.0 seconds. It offers about 400 miles of range (non-EPA), or about 320 miles of sustained highway driving at 75 mph.
It’s the most aerodynamic Jaguar ever, and that’s saying something, considering some of the sleek cars in the brand’s former stables. It achieves the range noted above thanks to a drag coefficient of 0.23, active vanes, and a three-stage deployable rear spoiler.
The press release says that every trip in the Type 01 “is an occasion,” but I actually think the car is the occasion. It’s one thing for not everyone to love it, and a completely different thing for a company to produce something so different from others and even from itself that it causes this much commotion. Again, look at what the sold-out Luce has done for Ferrari in terms of expansive marketing. I think regardless of how you feel, you ought to give Jaguar some kudos for this one.
Only 60 units will be produced, all designed and built in the U.K. Pricing was not released.
