A delegation from the Yagshygeldi Kakayev International University of Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan paid a working visit to Japan. During the visit, the sides discussed strengthening scientific and educational ties, implementing joint projects in green energy, and training highly qualified specialists in hydrogen technologies.

As part of the visit programme, the Turkmen delegation met with Keisuke Nagata, President of the University of Tsukuba. The talks focused on establishing joint research activities, training highly qualified engineers, and developing advanced technologies for producing hydrogen from natural gas.

This cooperation is being developed within the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 7 April 2025 between the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan and the University of Tsukuba. The document was signed ahead of the President of Turkmenistan’s visit to Japan.

The Turkmen delegation also held several meetings with the leadership of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), as well as the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

The visit programme also included familiarization with advanced developments at the Kiyasu Research Park research centre of Chiyoda Corporation, the Hydrogen Bonding Research Centre (HBRC) at the University of Tsukuba, and the TIAR research institute.

Special attention during the talks was given to specialist training. Currently, three lecturers from leading higher education institutions in Turkmenistan are undertaking professional development courses at the University of Tsukuba under the SDGs Global Leader programme, implemented with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The visit is aimed at expanding scientific and educational cooperation between higher education institutions in Turkmenistan and Japan, exchanging expertise in hydrogen energy, and advancing new technologies in the green energy sector.
