Deputy Director, Aeronautics Research at NASA’s Langley Research Center
Steven Velotas has over 35 years of aerospace leadership experience across NASA, industry, and the Department of Defense. As the Deputy Director for the Aeronautics Research Directorate at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, he supervises project management teams and oversees the planning and execution of aeronautics projects, conducting research and technology development for NASA’s Aeronautics Division. Prior to this role, Steve served as the agency Independent Research & Development (IRAD) Program Formulation Lead, where he led a multi-center team to define, develop, and implement a new agency-level program designed to spur and advance innovation for all missions and the nation. Previously within NASA, Steve served in numerous leadership roles, including Deputy Director for Langley Aeronautics Projects, Associate Director for Intelligent Flight Systems at Langley, Langley Transformation Portfolio Manager driving change at the center, Chief of the Langley Crew Systems and Aviation Operations Branch, and Deputy Project Manager for two airspace systems projects. Before joining NASA, Steve was the Director of Operations for AeroTech Research Inc., developing weather mitigation solutions for aircraft; a lead Systems Analyst for SAIC within the United States Joint Forces Command’s Joint Battle Center; and served as a Naval Flight Officer on E-2C Hawkeye command and control aircraft with the U.S. Navy. Steve earned an MBA in information systems from Old Dominion University and a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy.
