The irony of America slowly adopting the same anti-speeding technology as Europe is rich. But the claim is that this technology saves lives. Now another large American city has implemented speed cameras.
On Monday, Los Angeles, California turned on its new speed cameras. While residents should be aware the cameras are on, the ramp towards tickets going out will be delayed.
Speeders caught by the cameras in the first 60 days will only get a warning, but after that time period tickets will be issued.
NBC 4 Los Angeles has both a list and interactive map of where the first 25 cameras are that powered up on Monday. But by the end of the year LA plans to have 125 speed cameras installed and active.
The cameras are set to take photos of license plates of vehicles traveling 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit.
Fines range and are staggered based upon speed:
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation announced the speed camera program earlier in the year. “Speeding is one of the leading causes of serious injuries and deaths on our streets. In Los Angeles, around one in five fatal crashes in the city were directly attributed to speeding in 2024. To combat rising traffic deaths and injuries, the city is deploying the Speed Safety Systems Program to curb speeding and dangerous driving,” the LADOT said.
The LADOT said, “The deployment of this program will increase accountability for excessive and chronic speeding, and help people make better choices about their driving. The goal is safer streets, more lives saved, and fewer severe injuries.”
According to the LADOT, early data showed a 72% reduction in speeding in San Francisco because of the use of speed cameras.
The Los Angeles speed camera program is starting a five-year pilot period with the intention of providing a report at the end to the state legislature on the safety and economic impact.
