The final stage of an international tender for a project to build Turkmenistan’s first underground gas storage facility is currently underway. Companies from Austria, Germany, Türkiye and other countries are participating in the selection process. This was announced by Maksat Babayev, Chairman of the State Concern Türkmengaz.
According to him, proposals submitted by the candidate companies are currently being reviewed. A company to prepare the facility’s Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) will be selected in the near future. Seven companies are participating in the tender.
Maksat Babayev made the announcement at a press conference held following the international conference “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan — 2026.”
The project предусматривает the construction of an underground facility with a storage capacity of 5 billion cubic metres of natural gas. Once operational, the facility will help manage seasonal fluctuations in natural gas demand and maintain a stable gas supply during periods of increased consumption.
In addition, the establishment of an underground gas storage facility will be important for improving the reliability of Turkmenistan’s gas export routes. The project will help develop the country’s gas industry infrastructure and ensure more efficient use of its natural gas resources.
