In Kazakhstan’s Mangystau Region, major repairs on a 50-kilometre section of the Zhetybai–Zhanaozen–Kendirli–Turkmenistan border highway have reached their final stage. The project is expected to reduce travel time along this route by more than half and improve the efficiency of transport links between the two countries.
According to Lada.kz , the repair works cover the section between kilometres 179 and 229 of the highway. A total of 132 units of road construction machinery and 198 specialists are involved in the project.
Most of the planned work has already been completed. Earthworks have been carried out along the entire 50-kilometre section, while geotextile, a gravel-sand mixture and black crushed stone have been laid. In addition, the lower layer of coarse-grained asphalt concrete pavement has been installed along 47 kilometres.
The modernisation of the road is important for developing Kazakhstan’s transport and transit links with Turkmenistan and Iran, as well as for making use of the potential of the Kendirli resort area.
According to the source, asphalt concrete pavement was first laid on this section of the road in 1988–1990. No major repairs have been carried out since then.
Once the project is completed, the time required for transit and heavy-duty trucks to cover the 50-kilometre section is expected to decrease from the previous 5–8 hours to 2–2.5 hours. The capacity and transit potential of the transport corridor are also planned to double.
The upgraded road will allow Turkmen carriers to reach the main transport hubs of the Mangystau Region directly via the city of Zhetybai. It will also improve access to seaport infrastructure and help increase the efficiency of freight transportation.
