Home improvement retailer Lowe’s is testing drone delivery in Charlotte, N.C., saying in a Thursday (Sept. 24) press release that this fulfillment method gets select items to directly to do-it-yourself and professional customers in as little as 20 minutes.
This offering is powered by Wing and DoorDash , companies that already offer drone delivery operations in the area and serve other brands as well, according to the release.
Lowe’s customers can order products through the DoorDash app and have them delivered by Wing drones, the release said.
Lowe’s is initially offering a curated list of products to be delivered by drone, including hand tools, paint products, everyday household items and other products that are easily forgotten but critical for home improvement tasks. Wing drones can transport about 2.5 pounds per flight, per the release.
Drone delivery helps Lowe’s achieve its mission of removing friction from home improvement and making it easier for customers to complete their projects, Lowe’s Chief Information and AI Officer Seemantini Godbole said in the release.
“By piloting drone delivery, we’re addressing a real project pain point with an innovative solution that is integrated into the retail journey, giving our hometown customers next-generation fulfillment right when they need it,” Godbole said.
Wing debuted its drone delivery service in April 2022, operating from the parking lot of a Walgreens store in Little Elm, Texas, PYMNTS reported at the time. Wing is an Alphabet company, according to Wing’s website .
DoorDash and Wing launched their drone delivery pilot program in Australia in 2022 and extended the program to the United States in March 2024, starting with deliveries from one Wendy’s location in Christiansburg, Va.
DoorDash and Wing announced in April that they expanded their drone delivery partnership to metro Atlanta and that they already offered drone delivery in parts of Southwest Virginia, the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and the Charlotte region.
In an April press release announcing that expansion, Harrison Shih , head of the DoorDash drone program, said: “Autonomous delivery is an important part of how we’re making local commerce faster, more delightful and more sustainable.”
Wing said in June that its drone delivery partnership with Walmart is expanding to seven new major metro areas, bringing that collaboration’s total service footprint to nearly 20 U.S. markets.
