US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in Uzbekistan on a working visit accompanied by his family. His aircraft landed at Samarkand International Airport. The American diplomat was welcomed by Saida Mirziyoyeva, Head of the Presidential Administration of Uzbekistan; the country’s Foreign Minister, Bakhtiyor Saidov; US President’s Special Representative Sergio Gor; and Jonathan Henick, the US Ambassador to Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev also arrived in Samarkand to take part in meetings with the US Secretary of State and representatives of American business circles.
In Samarkand, Marco Rubio will participate in a meeting of foreign ministers in the “C5+1” format, which brings together the United States and the five Central Asian countries: Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
According to a statement published by the US Department of State on 13 October, Marco Rubio’s visit to Uzbekistan and India will take place from 17 to 22 October.
The US foreign policy department said the “C5+1” meeting would focus on the importance of strategic cooperation between the United States and Central Asian countries in strengthening peace and promoting prosperity. During the visit, Marco Rubio is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with representatives of countries across the region.
According to the US Department of State, more than 200 representatives of American business groups are accompanying the Secretary of State. Washington expects the visit to help expand trade and economic relations between the United States and Central Asian countries and create new opportunities for cooperation.
