A 2026 climate report examines devastating floods, hurricanes, wildfires and extreme heat affecting regions around the world. 🌡️ Scientists stress the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting the environment and strengthening preparedness for natural disasters.
Changes in the Earth’s weather and climate systems are becoming evident through the increasing frequency of natural disasters and the growing impact they have on different regions. According to scientists’ report, “The State of the Climate in 2026: Problems and Opportunities,” this situation is not only a warning about future risks but also one of the most pressing challenges of the present day.
Published in the scientific journal BioScience, the report examines changes in greenhouse gas emissions, rising temperatures, melting ice in polar regions and Greenland, rising sea levels, forest fires, and the environmental impact of armed conflicts. Particular attention is given to extreme weather events that occurred in different parts of the world from September 2025 through the summer of 2026.
Floods and Tropical Storms
In September 2025, the Indonesian island of Bali experienced one of its most severe floods in more than a decade. The disaster claimed at least 17 lives.
That same month, Typhoon Ragasa caused flooding and landslides across Southeast Asia and southern China. According to reports, at least 40 people died, while the economic damage exceeded $2.86 billion.
In October 2025, the Category 5 Hurricane Melissa caused widespread destruction in the Caribbean region. Its winds reached record levels for the Atlantic basin. A total of 95 people died as a result of the hurricane, primarily in Jamaica and Haiti. Economic losses exceeded $12.2 billion.
In November, major flooding occurred on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island as tropical storms and monsoon rains swept through the region. Reports indicated that 708 people had died. Roads, agricultural land and businesses suffered extensive damage.
Heavy Rainfall in Europe and Asia
In October 2025, Storm Amy affected Western and Northern Europe. Four people died, while more than 832,000 electricity customers lost power.
In November, several days of heavy rainfall in Albania and Greece triggered floods and landslides. Road and rail transport were disrupted.
Heavy rainfall also caused significant damage in the south-central coastal region of Vietnam. Flooding claimed 90 lives and inundated approximately 235,000 homes. The economic damage was estimated at $341 million.
In January 2026, Cyclone Harry caused extensive damage to homes and businesses in the Mediterranean region. Reports also suggested that the cyclone may have contributed to a shipwreck in which as many as 380 people reportedly died.
In February, Storm Nils disrupted transport services in Western Europe. One person died, and approximately 850,000 households lost electricity.
Flooding and a Severe Snowstorm in the Americas
In January 2026, a powerful snowstorm affected parts of the United States and Canada. Several people died, numerous flights were cancelled, and widespread power outages occurred.
In February, flooding in Colombia claimed 18 lives. More than 58,000 families were affected by the disaster.
During the same month, heavy rainfall in southeastern Brazil triggered floods and landslides. A total of 73 people died, and more than 5,500 people were forced to leave their homes.
In April 2026, several wildfires broke out in the US state of Florida. As the fires spread, local authorities ordered some residents to evacuate to safer areas.
Severe wildfires also affected Australia’s New South Wales in October 2025. The fires damaged property in Sydney’s outer suburbs and forced some residents to leave their homes.
Extreme Heat Poses a Threat to Health
In May 2026, intense heat affected a large part of India, putting millions of people’s health at risk. A heatwave was also recorded in Western Europe during the same period. Reports indicated at least seven deaths, overcrowded hospitals and disruptions to electricity systems.
In June, the number of excess deaths associated with prolonged extreme heat in Europe was estimated to have reached approximately 14,000. At the same time, meteorological stations in Antarctica recorded temperatures significantly above normal seasonal levels.
In June and July 2026, intense heat also affected the eastern United States and southern Canada. It coincided with powerful storms and disruptions to electricity supplies. The situation was reported to have affected approximately 50 million people.
Addressing Climate Change Remains a Critical Task
The events outlined in the scientists’ report demonstrate that floods, hurricanes, wildfires and extreme heat can cause substantial loss of life and economic damage in different parts of the world.
Key measures to reduce the impacts of climate change include limiting greenhouse gas emissions, developing environmentally sustainable technologies, protecting forests and preparing in advance for natural disasters. Improving early-warning systems and safeguarding communities can also help reduce the damage caused by extreme natural events.
