From October 14 to 16, 2026, a delegation from the Yagshygeldi Kakaev International University of Oil and Gas visited Japan. The delegation held meetings with the University of Tsukuba, Japanese energy authorities, and Chiyoda Corporation.
From October 14 to 16, 2026, the rector of the Yagshygeldi Kakayev International University of Oil and Gas paid a working visit to Japan. The main objective of the visit was to strengthen scientific and educational cooperation between the two countries and expand their engagement in the field of hydrogen energy.
During the visit, a meeting was held with Keisuke Nagata, President of the University of Tsukuba. The discussions focused on establishing joint research projects, training highly qualified specialists, and developing innovative technologies for producing hydrogen from natural gas.
Cooperation between the two sides is being developed on the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan and the University of Tsukuba on April 7, 2025. The document was signed ahead of the President of Turkmenistan’s visit to Japan.
On October 15, the Turkmen delegation held meetings with representatives of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), as well as the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Members of the delegation also visited the Kiyasu Research Park research centre operated by Chiyoda Corporation.
In addition, the delegation learned about the work of the University of Tsukuba’s Hydrogen Bonding Research Center (HBRC) and the TIAR research institute. These meetings and visits were important for exchanging scientific expertise in hydrogen energy and exploring new technologies.
Specialist training was another key focus of the visit. Currently, three lecturers from higher education institutions in Turkmenistan are undertaking professional development at the University of Tsukuba under the “SDGs Global Leader” programme, implemented with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The outcomes of the visit open up new opportunities to further develop cooperation between Turkmenistan and Japan in science, education and innovative technologies. Particular emphasis is being placed on expanding collaboration in hydrogen production from natural gas, joint research activities, and the training of highly qualified specialists in this field.
