Free peer conversations for Veterans after military service
VA News ·
Steele Sharpens Steele offers free, peer-led online conversations to help Veterans build connection, reflect on life after service and take practical action.
The structure of your daily life is different after leaving the military. You leave a familiar team with shared standards and a defined mission only to find that regular peer connection on the outside can take deliberate effort.
Steele Sharpens Steele offers free membership and free online Sharpening Sessions for Veterans across branches and eras. I founded the organization to create a consistent place for conversations about life after the uniform. My name is David L. Jones, and I am a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran based in Winter Garden, Florida.
The resource is straightforward: a live, peer-led conversation on Zoom, guided by a Veteran group session leader. Each session lasts 60 minutes and focuses on one practical topic. Small groups give participants room to listen, reflect and contribute. Veterans can participate from different locations without traveling to an in-person meeting.
Topics include structure, leadership after service, accountability, communication under pressure and purpose after the mission. A Veteran might choose a conversation about daily routines or maintaining trusted relationships. Another might want to think through responsibility at home or work. The aim is to connect experience with a practical decision that fits everyday life.
Each session stands alone, so Veterans can choose a topic that interests them without attending a previous session. Participants are welcome to listen, pass on questions or share only what they choose. Sharing personal experiences is optional. A session leader guides the conversation and helps participants maintain respectful engagement. The focus is shared responsibility through brotherhood and sisterhood.
To get started, visit the registration page and create a free member account. Then visit the Sharpening Sessions page to review the current schedule. Choose an available topic and time and reserve a seat. Registration is required, and each session has limited space. Use the member dashboard to manage the reservation and access the session.
After reserving, plan for an uninterrupted hour and check that your device can connect to Zoom. Read the code of conduct before joining. It describes expectations for respect, accountability, integrity, confidentiality and responsible participation. If your plans change, manage your reservation through the dashboard so another Veteran can use the available seat.
During the conversation, participants consider how the topic relates to their own lives. Before the session ends, each person can identify one practical standard, decision or action for the next seven days. That action might involve rebuilding a routine, following through on a responsibility, or approaching a conversation more deliberately. These are opportunities for reflection and action rather than promised outcomes.
Membership and Sharpening Sessions are free. No book purchase is required. The sessions provide nonclinical peer conversation, not therapy, medical advice or crisis services. They do not replace professional care.
Veterans interested in participating can start with one conversation and decide whether the format fits their needs. Visit the registration page , explore the available sessions and choose a topic relevant to your life today.
