Located in Denizli Province in southwestern Turkey, Pamukkale is one of the world’s most remarkable natural destinations. Famous for its white terraces, pools of clear blue water and hot mineral springs, this extraordinary place attracts visitors from around the world.

In 1988, Pamukkale, together with the ancient city of Hierapolis, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The total area of this site, which contains protected natural and historical landmarks, covers approximately 1,077 hectares.

The name “Pamukkale” means “Cotton Castle” in Turkish. The site lies in the valley of the Çürüksu River. Its main feature is a series of white terraced pools formed by calcite. Their white colour developed as mineral waters rich in calcium carbonate deposited layers of sediment over a long period.

The white terraces of Pamukkale reach approximately 160 metres in height and extend for about 2,700 metres. The blue pools nestled between them create a distinctive natural landscape.

There are 17 hot springs in the region, with water temperatures ranging from 35 to 100 degrees. The water from one particular spring plays an important role in the formation of the terraced pools. According to available information, its water temperature is 35.6 degrees, while its flow rate reaches 466 litres per second.

The mineral water flows downhill through specially constructed channels, filling the terraced pools. Calcium carbonate in the water settles on the rock surfaces as sediment. Initially soft, these deposits gradually harden over time and form a solid layer. This natural process has led to the formation of Pamukkale’s white terraces.

Pamukkale is distinguished not only by its natural beauty but also by its historical heritage. Its preservation as part of the same World Heritage site as the ancient city of Hierapolis further enhances the area’s natural and cultural significance. Today, Pamukkale is one of Turkey’s best-known tourist destinations, attracting travellers from countries around the world.
