Gartner kicked off its IT Symposium/Xpo this week and unveiled its annual list of the top strategic technology trends that organizations need to explore in the coming year. AI systems today are operating in an architectural vacuum, “generating software faster than humans can review it, creating unmanaged credential paths and binding processes to single-source vendor monopolies,” said Gene Alvarez , distinguished VP analyst at Gartner, in a statement . “To prevent this systemic exposure, organizations must move from a passive observer of model capabilities to an active architect of organization, human and machine boundaries.” Tech trends for today Gartner organized its 10 trends around three stages that enterprises must work through in order to transition from running static code to orchestrating autonomous machine workers, managing sensory AI, and enabling sovereign computing . The first stage, which is underway now and will consume the next one to three years, is to “leverage the nontextual AI frontier,” Gartner says. This phase includes the firm’s first three strategic technology trends. 1. Large quantitative models (LQM) Gartner defines these as “modular, hybrid neural network architectures built to process and analyze quantitative data.” They use existing mathematical formulas, methods and algorithms to model complex systems. Compared to LLMs, LQMs are designed explicitly for numerical reasoning and require significantly less memory, storage and compute, the firm says. LQMs can shift decision-making from reactive troubleshooting to proactive simulation, Gartner says. “This rigorous approach drives unprecedented business agility, enabling organizations to safely deploy autonomous forecasting in strictly regulated industries, such as finance and healthcare,” Alvarez said. Gartner’s prediction: By 2030, LQMs will replace LLMs in 25% of strategic forecasting and operational modeling tasks across major enterprise functions. 2. Speech reasoning models A decade of customer support automation hasn’t delivered the accuracy, speed and resolution rates that companies and customers want, and speech reasoning models can help close that gap, Gartner says. The firm defines these as “voice AI systems that reason directly on audio, tracking context and intent across a conversation to determine what to do next. They bypass traditional text-transcription by reasoning and executing chained tasks, extending autonomous resolution to multiturn problem solving, context shifts and error recovery.” Gartner’s prediction: By 2030, over 70% of enterprise voice interactions will be handled autonomously by speech models, up from less than 10% in 2026. 3. World models A world model is a computational system that’s trained on multimodal datasets “to learn abstract representations of physical and virtual environments,” according to Gartner. “They enable autonomous agents to simulate potential future states, predict outcomes and understand the consequences of their actions before execution.” World models will allow machines to comprehend space, time and causality—a cutting-edge development that will be driven by investments in robotics, autonomous vehicles, and spatial computing and enabled by significantly lower model training costs over the next three years, according to the firm. Gartner’s prediction: By 2030, 40% of robotics applications will incorporate world models to drive optimal decisions in adaptive environments, compared with less than 1% in 2025. Mid-term priorities Gartner’s second stage, on the three-to-five-year horizon, is to “govern the autonomous agent platform.” Machines are producing software faster than teams can audit it, and manual reviews are becoming the primary bottleneck, according to Gartner. The four strategic technology trends in this stage are about governance and limiting what autonomous agents can see, use and produce. 4. AI context platforms Fragmented operational knowledge causes hallucinations and prohibitive computing costs. AI context platforms unify scattered corporate knowledge and deliver the background knowledge AI agents need “to interpret inputs, make decisions and act in alignment with business objectives” Gartner says. “Without a dedicated context layer, organizations face severe operational risks, including overprivileged agents, compliance failures, low trust and excessive token consumption,” said Alvarez. Gartner’s prediction: By 2027, organizations that prioritize semantics in AI-ready data will increase agentic AI accuracy by up to 80% and reduce costs by up to 60%. 5. AI coding agent harness Gartner defines this technology as a closed-loop system that governs autonomous developer behavior across the software development lifecycle. “It integrates coding platforms with enterprise context, model routing, verification gates and feedback loops to ensure software meets safety and compliance standards,” the firm states. Without a dedicated harness, developers must spend time manually verifying machine output, which triggers costly processes and erases productivity gains , according to Gartner. Gartner’s prediction: By late 2026, autonomous coding agents will generate 20% of all public commits, making closed-loop harnesses mandatory to prevent critical software delivery quality failures. AI agent identity There’s a pressing need to actively govern autonomous digital workers , which can expose massive vulnerabilities in legacy systems, according to Gartner. The AI agent identity framework “correlates computational composite elements like model weights, prompts and credentials with runtime behaviors to establish continuous trust and human accountability,” the firm states. “Applying dynamic identity controls allows organizations to replace high-risk static credentials with dynamic, policy-controlled access,” said Alvarez. “AI agent identity connects models, prompts and credentials to agent actions, creating trust and accountability.” Gartner’s prediction: By 2028, 25% of enterprise security breaches will trace back to AI agent abuse due to unmanaged machine privileges and legacy credential practices. “If organizations don’t resolve these identity challenges, over half of their enterprise AI initiatives will halt entirely,” the firm warns. 7. Autonomous exposure remediation Gartner defines autonomous exposure remediation (AER) as “an integrated set of capabilities that combine AI techniques and automation to find, prioritize and fix security vulnerabilities across the enterprise digital estate.” An AER system will automatically test and deploy patches or virtual patches into production environments. “The traditional defensive process is broken, leaving organizations with an average 50-day exposure window where vulnerabilities remain unpatched,” Gartner explains. “By replacing slow, manual validation with continuous machine-speed defense, technology leaders transform vulnerability management from a passive queue into an active operational shield.” Gartner’s prediction: By 2031, organizations deploying autonomous exposure remediation will reduce their average vulnerability containment window from weeks to within 48 hours. Future endeavors The third stage, set for five-plus years, calls for enterprises to “architect durable agility.” This phase acknowledges the risk of cloud dependency—including SaaS fatigue and provider lock-in—and focuses on transitioning to sovereign, disposable, and organic environments. It includes the final three strategic technology trends in Gartner’s 2027 list. 8. Sovereign tech “Sovereign tech refers to hardware, software, databases and AI models technically and legally architected to offer realistic exit strategies from critical providers,” Gartner says. “These technologies remain perpetually available to prevent lock-in and secure complete operational continuity.” Gartner’s prediction: By 2030, over 75% of non-U.S.-based organizations will adopt digital sovereignty strategies, shifting critical workloads to reduce geopolitical and vendor lock-in risks. 9. Disposable applications Gartner defines disposable applications as purpose-built software applications designed to be intentionally retired once their specific business purpose has been fulfilled or is no longer relevant. “Transitioning to disposable applications fundamentally alters how software is bought, designed and budgeted for, turning application portfolios into dynamic systems, rather than long-term legacy investments,” said Alvarez. Gartner’s prediction: By 2030, widespread SaaS fatigue and AI-driven software abundance will force leading organizations to ensure 80% of new applications are disposable and easy to replace. 10. Wetware as a service Gartner defines wetware as a service as “an emerging operational model that provides remote cloud-based access to living or synthetic biological systems for computation.” The technology is under development in response to the limitations of traditional silicon computer hardware that can’t scale enterprise AI indefinitely due to unsustainable environmental and energy demands, Gartner says. These hosted organic processors can use the natural plasticity of biochemical networks to run complex algorithms with extreme energy efficiency, according to Gartner: “Lab-grown biological neurons can perform goal-oriented computation with extreme efficiency, running complex pattern recognition algorithms on a fraction of traditional server power.” Gartner’s prediction: By 2030, 25% of enterprise organizations prioritizing specialized low-power AI will deploy biological computing to bypass traditional silicon limits.
