A long-awaited reunion: Compassionate care brings family together

VA News ·

After 22 years apart, Judith Collins and her daughter Toni reunited with support from compassionate care staff who helped bring them back together.

For more than 22 years, Judith Collins and her daughter, Toni, had lived without contact. Old hurt had grown into silence, and silence into distance. Over the years at VA North Texas Community Living Center (CLC), staff and providers gently encouraged Collins to consider reconnecting. Their steady support created the possibility for a moment no one was sure would ever come.

That moment arrived on July 19, 2026. Toni and her husband, William, flew from Indiana, landing at DFW just after noon. Despite her intention to visit, Toni found herself overwhelmed by fear, anger and panic. She spent hours in a VA ER parking lot, trying to gather the courage to walk inside. William stayed by her side, talking through her worries and reminding her she wasn’t alone.

Inside, the VA North Texas CLC team worked together to prepare the environment with care and dignity. Providers Dr. Emily Lukose, Dr. Lara Tucker and Dr. Vijaya Sudanagunta spent years helping Collins navigate the emotions surrounding her estranged relationship with her daughter. Staff members Leyoni, Sherly, Shinu, Teri, Emmy and Nola each played a part, supporting Collins, preparing her room and creating a warm and welcoming setting. Teri helped Collins shower and dress, while Leyoni and Sherly arranged flowers and cake, making the room feel inviting.

Stephen and Rhonda arrived early with flowers, cake and candies for Toni’s children, bringing a sense of calm and reassurance to the room.

After hours of hesitation, Toni finally found the courage to walk into her mother’s room with William by her side. Collins greeted her with flowers, and the two shared a long, quiet embrace—one that closed more than 20 years of distance.

For over two hours, the room was filled with long-buried memories, laughter and honest conversation.

With Stephen and Rhonda quietly supporting from nearby, Toni and her mother found themselves reconnecting more naturally than either expected. They even cut a cake together and offered pieces to everyone. On her way home, Toni sent a message expressing how much the support meant to her and how the visit, despite her fears, felt easier and more healing than she ever imagined.

This reunion was the result of years of compassionate, coordinated care within VA North Texas Healthcare System . The system’s commitment to whole health care enabled Collins to navigate longstanding emotional wounds while also creating a safe and supportive environment for family reconnection.

The staff of VA North Texas CLC built trust with Toni for nearly a year, and also supported her mother through decades of emotional pain. Their dedication made this reunion possible by creating space for healing that the family had once believed impossible.
