Harry Shum Jr. Addresses Whether He’ll Be in the ‘Glee’-boot: ‘I’m Currently Really, Really Busy’

The franchise announced Oct. 21 that a spinoff penned by Ryan Murphy is officially in the works.
Harry Shum Jr. went from dancing as Mike Chang on Glee to Dancing With the Stars . But now that a reboot of the beloved musical dramedy is officially in the works, will he bring his skills back home to Lima, Ohio?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly posted Wednesday (Oct. 28), the actor addressed what the chances are of him returning to the William McKinley High School choir room. “I’m currently really, really busy now,” he said candidly, after earning DWTS ‘ first perfect score of the season, “but I would love to keep continuing because I love [ Glee ].”
The outlet had also asked Shum about whether he’ll star in the HBO spinoff series of the movie Crazy Rich Asians , in which he had a small role that seemingly teased there was more to come for his character.
“Obviously, the last of [ Crazy Rich Asians ] ended on the characters that Gemma [Chan] and I play, so I would love to try and find a way to make it work,” he said. “Same thing with Glee .”
Glee announced Oct. 21 via its official social media accounts that the reboot had received a green light following creator Ryan Murphy’s hints that he’d been noodling around with a script idea for a present-day version of the show. After originally airing on Fox from 2009 to 2015, the new Glee will find its home on Disney+ and Hulu.
The project is still in the very early stages of development, but Lea Michele is already locked in to reprise her role as leading lady Rachel Berry, according to Variety , though her reported return has not been officially confirmed. Kevin McHale also appears to be down to return as Artie Abrams, as he recently reposted a 2020 headline about Drake surpassing the Glee cast’s record for most Billboard Hot 100 hits and wrote, “Challenge accepted.” Currently, Glee is in fourth place for most entries on the chart, despite more than a decade going by since the show released music; only Drizzy, Taylor Swift and Future have a lead on the cast — for now.
