Is a retired Albertan too reliant on bank dividends in his RRIF?

FP Answers: There are practical ways to reduce concentration risk without giving up the cash flow needed to support retirement
Q. I am a 74-year-old married Alberta senior who is worried about overconcentration of registered retirement income fund (RRIF) investments in banks. With the rise of stock prices in the financial sector, I find that I am very vulnerable to a Black Swan event — something unpredictable — that could impact these investments. I have been relying on dividend income to cover part of RRIF payments but would like to find something else that provides the same benefit. I would also like to add some U.S. exposure but am concerned about the U.S. tax consequences. Do you have any suggestions for my RRIF investments, and what are other seniors doing in my situation? —Kent Read More
