Turkmenistan Introduces Advanced LDAR Technologies to Detect Methane Leaks

The Research Institute of Natural Gas under the State Concern Turkmengas has received modern LDAR equipment designed to detect methane leaks at industrial facilities with high precision. Manufactured by SENSIA Solutions, the equipment can visually identify gas leaks in real time.

The Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas of the State Concern Türkmengaz has received advanced LDAR equipment capable of detecting methane leaks at production facilities with a high degree of accuracy. The new technologies are designed to reduce natural gas losses, protect the environment and improve industrial safety.

The official handover ceremony took place at the premises of the Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas of the State Concern Türkmengaz. The event was organised within the framework of the European Union’s project “European Union for a Green Development of Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action for 2024–2029.” The project is jointly funded by the European Union and the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Participants included Petra Dachtler, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Turkmenistan; Madalinskiy, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkmenistan; executives and specialists from the State Concern Türkmengaz and the Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas; as well as representatives of international organisations.

The delivery of the LDAR equipment marked an important milestone in the activities carried out under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, the State Concern Türkmengaz and GIZ.

Last year, an Information and Analytical Centre was launched at the institute to collect, process and analyse data. The provision of the new equipment enables this work to continue and supports the practical application of scientific and analytical capabilities in industrial operations.

The LDAR equipment, manufactured by SENSIA Solutions, one of the leading producers in this field, is designed to provide real-time visualisation of gas leaks at production facilities and detect them with a high degree of accuracy.

The introduction of these technologies is important from both environmental and economic perspectives. The timely detection of methane leaks helps reduce emissions into the atmosphere and supports Turkmenistan in fulfilling its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge and the Paris Agreement. At the same time, preventing natural gas losses enables the efficient use of valuable raw materials and improves industrial safety.

As part of the equipment handover ceremony, a three-day specialised training programme was also launched for specialists from the State Concern Türkmengaz and the Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas. The programme includes theoretical sessions, training in the use of specialised software, and practical field exercises at the facilities of the Gündogargazakdyryş Directorate in the city of Shatlyk.

Dr Karolina Milow, Head of the GIZ programme, noted that the introduction of advanced LDAR equipment represents an important step towards linking the work of the Information and Analytical Centre with concrete measures implemented at production facilities. According to her, the new technologies will help improve monitoring accuracy, prevent air pollution, reduce methane emissions and minimise losses of valuable natural gas.

The cooperation carried out under the “European Union for a Green Development of Turkmenistan” project is aimed at reducing methane emissions, strengthening the scientific and technical capacities of national specialists, and supporting environmentally sustainable development in Turkmenistan and the wider region.
