Albania aims to complete its European Union accession negotiations by 2027 and become a full EU member by 2030. The country has opened all 33 negotiating chapters, with three provisionally closed. Further progress will depend on implementing reforms and meeting the EU’s accession requirements.
Albania aims to complete its negotiations on joining the European Union (EU) by 2027 and become a full member of the Union by 2030.
This was stated on September 21 in Tirana by Taulant Balla, head of the Socialist Party parliamentary faction in Albania and co-chair of the EU–Albania Parliamentary Stabilisation and Association Committee, at a meeting of the committee.
Balla noted that Albania has opened all areas of negotiations on EU accession and is now moving into the stage of closing them. According to him, in the next phase, not only the adoption of reforms but also their effective implementation in practice will be of key importance.
Albanian Prime Minister and Socialist Party leader Edi Rama had also previously set the goal of completing the country’s negotiations by 2027 and achieving EU membership by 2030. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos also said that, if reforms continue, completing the negotiations by the end of 2027 and achieving membership by 2030 would be possible.
Albania applied for EU membership in 2009 and was granted candidate country status in 2014. The formal stage of accession negotiations began in 2022. At the latest accession conference, held in July 2026, three chapters — science and research, education and culture, and external relations — were provisionally closed. Thus, Albania has opened all 33 negotiating chapters, three of which are currently considered provisionally closed.
Albania’s EU accession process depends on the country carrying out the necessary reforms and reaching agreement on all negotiating chapters. Under EU rules, agreements reached on individual chapters are not considered final until all negotiations have been completed.
