NASA’s Satellite Needs Working Group Implementation Team, Lead and Project Scientist
Dr. Pontus Olofsson is a research scientist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where he leads the agency’s contribution to the interagency Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG) through NASA’s SNWG Implementation Team, known as NSITE. Through the working group, NSITE identifies, communicates, and addresses the Earth observation needs of federal agencies to support their ongoing missions and applications. This work has resulted in some of NASA’s most impactful data products, including the Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 dataset, which has distributed more than 6 billion files.
Prior to joining NASA in 2022, Olofsson was a research professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University. He completed his academic training at Lund University in Sweden, earning degrees in physical geography and mathematical statistics, followed by a doctorate in physical geography in 2007.
Olofsson’s primary research focuses on mining archives of satellite data to understand Earth’s changes and their impact on people and the environment. He has a special interest in combining remote sensing data and statistical sampling techniques to measure environmental change.
