At the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States, held on October 9, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov put forward a number of important initiatives aimed at deepening regional and international cooperation in the field of transport and logistics.

In his address, the Head of State emphasized that Turkmenistan attached particular importance to the transport sector and to fully unlocking the infrastructure potential of CIS countries. As a practical step toward intensifying systematic cooperation, the President of the country proposed declaring 2029 the “Year of CIS Transport Connectivity.”

Particular emphasis was placed on the role of the Commonwealth in strengthening sustainable transport on the global stage. Head of State Serdar Berdimuhamedov recalled Turkmenistan’s initiative to proclaim the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport for 2026–2035, which was established by a corresponding resolution adopted at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The Head of State expressed confidence that CIS countries would actively participate in implementing the objectives of this Decade and reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s readiness to hold consultations and develop joint practical proposals both within the Commonwealth and under the auspices of the United Nations. The UN General Assembly resolution “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Commonwealth of Independent States,” dated August 26, 2025, provides a solid legal foundation for this work.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov also stated his intention to promote the consolidation of the Commonwealth’s efforts.

“Overall, Turkmenistan intends to facilitate the consolidation of efforts by CIS countries to develop international cooperation in establishing transport and transit corridors, enhancing their resilience, and ensuring their accessibility to all countries, including landlocked CIS states,” said the President of Turkmenistan.

The Head of State added that these efforts were based on important international agreements, particularly the outcomes of the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, held in August 2025 in the city of Turkmenbashi, and the “Awaza Political Declaration” adopted following the conference and unanimously endorsed by the UN General Assembly.
