Data Systems Evolution Lead

Dr. Brian Freitag leads the Data Systems Evolution team in the Office of Data Science and Informatics at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. In this role, he enables scientific exploration and discovery through data visualization techniques and analysis capabilities that lower the barrier to entry for cloud-hosted data.

Freitag oversees major initiatives including the Visualization, Exploration, and Data Analysis (VEDA) project, which promotes data interoperability and incorporates an open-source science cyberinfrastructure. Prior to VEDA, he led the production of NASA’s Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 dataset distributed by the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center and managed petabyte-scale projects with industry partners.

Since joining NASA in September 2020, Freitag’s leadership and contributions to cloud-based Earth science research platforms have earned multiple NASA Group Achievement Awards. His expertise spans machine learning forecasting applications, disaster monitoring, and large-scale data production. He holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in atmospheric science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, as well as a master’s degree in Earth and planetary science. His dedication to open science and data-driven storytelling continues to accelerate discovery and propel the next generation of scientific researchers.
