Pakistan and Turkmenistan are considering direct passenger and cargo flights between Islamabad and Ashgabat. The initiative is aimed at expanding trade, strengthening business ties and improving multimodal logistics between Central Asia and Pakistan.
Pakistan and Turkmenistan are considering the possibility of launching direct passenger and cargo air services between Islamabad and Ashgabat in order to develop trade relations and the multimodal logistics system.
According to Orient , the issue is being discussed by representatives of relevant Pakistani government agencies and experts. The launch of direct air services would make it possible to diversify trade flows between the two countries, strengthen contacts between business communities and expand the exchange of services.
Experts note that periodic logistical disruptions on land transport routes passing through Afghanistan are increasing the importance of alternative transport solutions. In this regard, a multimodal logistics system incorporating air, road and rail transport could help organize trade relations between Central Asia and Pakistan more efficiently.
Sabz Ali Khan, Director General of Pakistan’s Directorate General of Trade Organizations, said that the launch of direct air services would open new opportunities for exporters. In his view, expanding direct contacts between business communities, organizing joint exhibitions and developing transport infrastructure would create conditions for making more effective use of the existing potential of trade turnover between the two countries.
According to the report, the volume of trade turnover between Pakistan and Turkmenistan amounted to approximately $7.05 million in the 2025–2026 financial year.
Logistics specialists and representatives of the International Road Transport Chamber of Pakistan note that direct air services could provide a convenient solution for transporting urgent and high-value cargo. At the same time, road and rail transport would retain their key role in the transportation of large-volume cargo.
The development of a multimodal transport system would make it possible to integrate air, land and sea transport into a unified logistics network. Such a system could expand opportunities for interregional trade and transit transportation by connecting Central Asian countries with ports on the Arabian Sea coast.
