The Karakum Desert is one of the regions of Turkmenistan where the country's natural beauty and unique riches come together. Its vast sandy expanses, towering sand dunes, diverse takyrs, extensive plains and variety of plant life make this region especially beautiful.

This year, with the participation of the international organization TURKSOY, distinguished artists from Turkic-speaking countries and the creative team of Azerbaijani film director Vagif Mustafayev, a feature film entitled “(Khoja Nasreddin) Ependi — Protector in Difficult Times” was filmed in the Karakum Desert. Several students from the Turkmen State Institute of Culture were selected to portray certain characters and take part in mass scenes.

As one of those students, I was also fortunate to have the opportunity to play the role of a young horseman in the film. Together with the creative team, we spent several days in the central part of the Karakum Desert, participating in the filming of various scenes alongside foreign actors.

During the filming days, we had the opportunity to observe the natural beauty of the Karakum Desert more closely. The white sandy expanses, towering dunes, diverse takyrs, distant chulbas rising on the horizon, natural landscapes stretching across the vast plains, and kak reservoirs where rainwater collects all made a particularly strong impression on us. The distinctive landscapes of the Central Karakum and the Trans-Unguz Karakum also attracted the attention of foreign guests.

The desert's flora and fauna are also remarkably rich. Many endemic and medicinal plant species growing here are considered valuable natural resources. Their medicinal properties are described in detail in the multi-volume scientific and encyclopedic work “Medicinal Plants of Turkmenistan” by Hero Arkadag.

During our stay in the Karakum Desert, we encountered plants such as white and black saxaul, sözen, black tree, alatikен, tilkichayi, gyzgany, ityuzum, düýedaban, akbash, syzan and keyigokara. Other plants, including gyýak, ýylak, ýandak, tilkiguýruk and burkaz, also demonstrate the richness of the desert's vegetation.

The Karakum Desert stands out not only for its sandy expanses and vast plains but also for its distinctive plant life, natural features and exceptional beauty. Seeing this remarkable region with one's own eyes provides an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of its natural wealth and beauty.
