The Mac Studio with 512GB of RAM is shipping, and it costs New Car Money
Macworld ·

Macworld People like to joke that a high-end Mac “costs more than my first car did!” Well, after being delayed for about a month, the Mac Studio with M5 Ultra chip and 512GB of RAM is finally shipping, and it costs more than some brand new cars today . When the new Mac Studios with M5 Max and M5 Ultra started shipping on September 22, one configuration was not yet available: that with a whopping 512GB of RAM. In order to select that much RAM, you must also choose the M5 Ultra configuration, of course, and the version with the maximum CPU and GPU cores at that. That puts the minimum possible price for a Mac Studio with 512GB of RAM at an eye-watering $22,299. It’s a full $11,500 more than the exact same configuration with 256GB of RAM. To put the price in perspective, it’s the about same price as the entry-level trim for a Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, or Kia K4. Apple Yes, you read that right. You can buy two M5 Ultra Mac Studios, each with 256GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, for a total of $21,598 ($10,799 each). You’re still getting 512GB of RAM in total, but double the SSD and two full-size M5 Ultra processors, and it will cost you about $700 less . And that’s with a paltry 1TB SSD, which you’d be crazy to configure if you were spending this much on a computer. It’s $500 more for 2TB, and $1,500 for 4TB. But hey, if you’re made of money anyway, why not spring for the 16TB SSD, a mere $7,500 upgrade? That means the most you can spend on a single Mac Studio is $29,799. Do you want a fully loaded Mac Studio, or a Toyota Corolla hybrid at the full XLE trim level?
