‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’: Here Are All the Musician Guest Stars, Ranked
Billboard ·

From Harry Connick Jr. to Ludacris, Hilary Duff and beyond, artists from across genres have appeared on NBC's long-running procedural.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit may be known for its longevity (28 seasons and counting!), beloved cast members both current and past (we miss you, Stabler!), and plots that are ripped from the headlines. But what does it have to do with music?
Sure, the series may be led by series OG Mariska Hargitay’s Capt. Olivia Benson, but don’t forget that the second longest-running cast member is none other than rapper Ice-T, who joined NBC’s procedural back in 2000, when he was introduced in the season two premiere as Det. Odafin Tutuola. (That’s sergeant to you now, rookies!) What’s more, the show — and like many of the L&O franchise’s spin-offs — has featured notable guest stars. And in SVU ‘s 20-plus years, pay close enough attention, and viewers will notice that the crime drama’s celeb cameos are often ripped from the Billboard charts, too.
One might think with Ice-T being one of the beloved cast members and a rapper, that the show may focus on mainly hip-hop artists as special guests, but that hasn’t been the case. During its years on the air, SVU ‘s musician cameos (we’re counting those with chart achievements, Grammy recognition, played live music and/or released music) have come from across various genres, including — yes — hip-hop, but also pop, country, R&B and even rock.
From easy-to-miss cameos to even one multi-episode arc, dedicated Billboard staffers binge-watched numerous episodes to argue like wannabe ADAs over which music stars had the best guest appearance to date. To quote the show’s intro: “These are their stories” … and Billboard ‘s picks.
