Turkmenistan and Iran are expanding their cooperation in developing transport infrastructure and improving the efficiency of transit traffic. One of the important agreements reached in this area is the decision to begin construction of the Gumdag–Etrek highway in Turkmenistan within the next two months.
This was announced by Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development and Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Iran and Turkmenistan, Farzaneh Sadeghi, following her visit to Turkmenistan.
The project is expected to be implemented by an experienced Iranian contractor. Construction of the new highway is aimed at facilitating freight vehicle movement, increasing the capacity of cross-border routes and improving the logistics of international road transportation.
During the Iranian delegation’s visit to Turkmenistan, several meetings with the Turkmen side were held in Awaza. The discussions covered the implementation of previously reached agreements, the development of interparliamentary relations, the expansion of cooperation in the energy sector, and increasing exports of high-tech engineering and technical services.
Important areas of bilateral cooperation were also discussed during a meeting with Dunyagozel Gulmanova, Chairperson of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
The talks placed particular emphasis on increasing freight volumes by rail and road, improving the operations of border terminals and making effective use of the region’s transit potential. Farzaneh Sadeghi noted positive developments in the operation of border terminals and highlighted Turkmenistan’s role as an important logistics hub for transit cargo flows across Eurasia.
The sides also discussed opportunities to develop trilateral cooperation formats involving Turkmenistan and Iran alongside Azerbaijan and Russia. Cooperation in this area is important for strengthening the connectivity of the international transport system and expanding regional trade and economic relations.
The agreement to begin construction of the Gumdag–Etrek highway represents one of the practical outcomes of cooperation between the two countries in developing transport infrastructure. Implementation of the project could help improve freight transportation conditions, expand cross-border transport links and make more effective use of Turkmenistan’s transit potential.
