Live Whole Health #337: Your spine is your lifeline
VA News ·
A flexible spine supports youthfulness, strength and better movement. Gentle daily stretches, mindful posture and regular activity help keep your back healthy
“You are only as young as your spine is flexible.” This is a quote by Joseph Pilates who invented the Pilates method of physical fitness. He believed that if your spine is stiff at 30, it reflects premature aging, whereas a flexible spine at 60 indicates maintained youthfulness and functional strength.
Gentle twisting, bending and stretching exercises that target all three spinal regions will help your spine to stay flexible. Strengthening core muscles and maintaining upright posture also support the spine.
Dr. Aaron Armetta, a chiropractor at the Omaha VA Medical Center, offers several simple movements that can help release the tension and strain on the neck and back. Check out this 5.5 minute video to learn how to take care of your spine at work and at home.
Exercise can help your back muscles strengthen and become more flexible. Ask your healthcare provider about exercises for your back. Physical therapy can help to develop a home exercise program.
Many people benefit from practices such as tai chi or yoga since the movements they include address how to be mindful of your body and posture. If you have anxiety or fear that keeps you from exercising, it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider. They can tailor a movement program to your current level and ability.
