The women’s national chess team of Turkmenistan successfully competed at the 46th World Chess Olympiad held in Samarkand, winning the silver medal in the “B” rating category.

On the final day of the competition, held on September 27, the Turkmen female chess players defeated the Belarusian team 3.5–0.5 to secure the silver medal. In the overall standings, the women’s national team of Turkmenistan finished 33rd among 190 national teams from around the world.

This is the second consecutive medal for Turkmenistan’s women’s national team at the World Chess Olympiad. Two years ago, at the Olympiad in Budapest, the Turkmen female chess players won the gold medal in the “C” category. After moving up to the stronger “B” category, the national team once again reached the podium. Although Turkmenistan and Croatia recorded the same result, the Croatian players ranked higher based on tiebreak criteria.

The final rounds of the competition were particularly successful for the Turkmenistan team. The Turkmen female chess players first defeated the Kyrgyzstan team 4–0 and then secured a victory over Belarus.

One of the main breakthroughs of the competition was the performance of Mehrä Ahamyradowa. Playing on the fourth board, she scored 7.5 points in 10 games, fulfilling the requirements for the FIDE Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title and, for the first time, the Woman International Master (WIM) title.

Leyla Shohradowa also made a major contribution to the team’s overall success, scoring 7 points in 11 games. Jahan Rejepowa, Lala Shohradowa and Ogulsuraý Baýrambaýewa also distinguished themselves with productive performances.

According to Mergen Kakabaýew, Secretary General of the Chess Federation of Turkmenistan and head coach of the women’s national team, every member of the team managed to demonstrate at the competition the progress achieved in recent months. He said that the team performed above its starting ranking position and arrived at the Olympiad with a high level of preparation.

The men’s national team of Turkmenistan also delivered a respectable performance, finishing 64th among 206 teams. A particular individual achievement in the men’s team was recorded by Amanmuhammet Hommadow, who completed the final norm required for the International Master (IM) title.

Vepaly Halyňyazow also produced a strong result, winning all four of his games. Grandmaster Meýlis Annaberdiýew also played an important role in the men’s team’s performance.

The results achieved by Turkmen chess players in Samarkand were the outcome of systematic preparation carried out since January 2026. As part of the preparation programme, training camps and international training sessions were held in Ashgabat.

The women’s national team of Turkmenistan winning the silver medal in the “B” category, together with the men’s team’s result at the international competition, demonstrated new outcomes of the ongoing preparation work in chess in the country.
