Democrats see Trump ‘rescue mission’ in Mississippi

Both parties remain skeptical that Democrats can win Mississippi’s Senate race, but there are signs it’s competitive.

Some Democrats are trying to temper soaring expectations in the battle for the Senate — but they also can’t help but savor President Donald Trump’s campaign stop in deep-red Mississippi on Monday.

It’s a sign that “a full-out rescue mission is being launched to bail out Cindy Hyde-Smith,” argued Monica Robinson, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Both parties remain skeptical that Democrats can win Mississippi’s Senate race. But there are several reasons it could be competitive: Trump’s visit follows former Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign stop for Democrat Scott Colom, and both parties’ top super PACS are spending in the state.

Even with Mississippi’s high percentage of Black voters, Republicans think the Magnolia State is just too red. Colom is “too radical to ever be the next senator from Mississippi,” said Samantha Cantrell, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
