Mount Bromo, located on the Indonesian island of Java, attracts visitors with its distinctive natural beauty. It lies within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, near the village of Podokoyo and not far from the city of Pasuruan. This active volcano is considered one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations.
Bromo Tengger Semeru was designated a national park in 1982 and covers an area of more than 50,000 hectares. The park is known for its mountain ranges, lakes, rivers and unusual landforms created by volcanic activity. Mount Semeru, the highest point on the island of Java, rises to 3,676 metres.
One of the park’s distinctive features is the vast area known as the “Tengger Sand Sea.” Formed from volcanic ash and sand, this dark landscape covers approximately 5,250 hectares. The natural scenery includes volcanic peaks such as Bromo, Batok, Widodaren, Kursi and Watangan. Together, these striking formations create the region’s unique appearance.
Rising to 2,329 metres, Mount Bromo is part of the Tengger Mountains. It is considered a sacred site by the local population. The reddish mountain slopes and wide expanses of sand surrounding the volcano are particularly appealing to visitors who enjoy observing natural landscapes.
Visitors can reach Mount Bromo on foot from the village of Cemoro Lawang or by using vehicles suitable for the local road conditions. However, when volcanic activity intensifies, access to certain parts of the national park may be temporarily restricted for safety reasons.
Mount Bromo is a remarkable destination that brings together the power and beauty of nature and forms an important part of Indonesia’s tourism appeal.
