The set features four additional tracks: "Patient Zero," "Cleveland!," "Pink Clouding" and "Babylon."
Taylor Swift just gave fans four new songs to pore over, unleashing The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore on Friday (Sept. 25) as a deluxe edition of her 12-week Billboard 200 -topping 12th studio album released last year.
Continuing and expanding upon the tone and songwriting tricks she established on the original set — which produced Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite” — the four new tracks on Encore are both upbeat and thoughtful, with Max Martin and Shellback adding their signature pop sheen to each. As Swift explained when she first announced the deluxe, the trio reunited in Sweden after the release of Showgirl to celebrate the album’s record-breaking first-week sales, but ended up spontaneously continuing where they left off.
“Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs,” Swift wrote on Instagram when announcing Encore . “I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made.”
But as with any new Swift songs, listeners are eager to decode who or what each of the tracks is about. Below, Billboard synthesizes fan theories, the pop star’s own words and factual Swiftie history to create a comprehensive guide exploring the meanings of each song, both overt and subtle.
