Datacenters are outrunning the power grid. Water supplies are stretched. Insurers and lenders want climate risk on the table before they fund your next project. And your engineers won’t act on an AI recommendation they can’t verify.
If you lead technology strategies in energy and resources, you’ve felt at least one of these pressures. The message from IDC’s latest FutureScape is straightforward: you can’t build your way out of today’s constraints. The companies that pull ahead will put AI and unified data to work where it counts, from control rooms and capital projects to subsurface engineering and mining operations, with clear limits on how much authority AI holds.
In grid operations, capital projects and refining, AI is starting to execute bounded tasks rather than just suggesting them. The emerging model is graduated authority: agents handle repeatable, low-risk work while people keep control and oversight of safety-critical and ambiguous decisions.
Global datacenter energy use is set to jump from 404 TWh in 2024 to 1,310 TWh by 2029, according to IDC’s Datacenter Facilities Index. Utilities, datacenter operators, water providers and large energy users are moving from static contracts to real-time coordination because none of them can solve these energy imbalances on their own.
Engineers, operators, regulators, insurers and lenders will accept AI outputs only if they can verify them. Physics-grounded models, unified asset and geospatial data, and process twins are becoming prerequisites for decision-grade AI.
The report spans electric and water utilities, energy retailers, datacenter operators, oil and gas producers, miners, refiners and energy-intensive consumers. A few headline callouts:
Four additional predictions cover adaptive capital projects, visionary customer experience platforms for energy retailers, hybrid AC/DC microgrids and twin-trained AI in refining. Each comes with a view on what it means for your business and your IT organization.
Each prediction in the report provides potential impacts, specific actions and essential guidance for IT, lines of business and executive leaders. Across all ten predictions, five major themes stand out:
The full report goes well beyond this preview. You’ll get all 10 predictions with the evidence behind them, the business and IT implications of each, the external drivers shaping them, and concrete, owner-assigned actions and essential guidance you can take into your next planning cycle.
