Congratulations to Francis Halzen (U. Wisconsin-Madison), winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.”

The 22 September 2017 detection by IceCube of a high-energy neutrino from the direction of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) observed by Fermi -LAT to be simultaneously flaring in gamma rays provided the first evidence for an association between AGN and the sources of astrophysical neutrinos.

IceCube’s work discovering and characterizing high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin has been foundational to the field. NASA is contributing to this field and flew the balloon-borne pathfinder Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 2 (EUSO-SPB2) in 2023.
