Midterm elections for the US Congress will take place on 3 November 2026. The results could affect the balance of power in the country’s legislature and shape the political landscape during the remaining two years of Donald Trump’s second presidential term.
The US Congress consists of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be contested in the elections. Members of the House are elected for two-year terms.
In the Senate, elections will be held for 35 of the 100 seats. Of these, 33 will be contested in regular elections and two in special elections. Senators serve six-year terms.
In addition, gubernatorial elections will take place in 36 states. Some states will also elect members of their local legislatures and other public officials.
At present, the Republican Party holds a majority in both chambers of Congress. The Democratic Party, meanwhile, aims to secure majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the upcoming elections.
If Democrats gain a majority in either or both chambers, it could become more difficult for President Donald Trump to advance his legislative initiatives. Congress would also have greater opportunities to oversee the activities of the presidential administration.
If the Republican Party retains its majorities, favourable conditions for advancing legislative initiatives supporting Trump’s political agenda will remain in place.
The 3 November vote does not include presidential elections. In the United States, the head of state is elected once every four years. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2028.
The results of the midterm elections could affect not only the country’s domestic policy but also its foreign policy, economy, migration issues and international trade.
The elections will determine the new composition of Congress, which will begin its work in January 2027.
