Britney Spears’ Son Jayden James On Being Chip Off the Pop Block: ‘Expressing Myself Through Music Has Always Been My Best Therapy’

The 20-year-old son of Spears and ex Kevin Federline has been praised by his mom for what she's said are his "sick" piano skills.
Britney Spears and her ex-husband Kevin Federline have done a good job of keeping their two sons out of the public eye. But in a new chat with Interview magazine titled “What Does It Feel Like to Be Jayden James?,” the couple’s youngest finally opens up about his love of music, his car obsession, first crush and what it feels like to be both hardly known and heavily scrutinized.
In the rare glimpse into the 20-year-old budding male model’s personal life, James offers a succinct and telling answer to the question, “What does it feel like to be you?” His response? “It feels like I always have something to prove, even though I don’t need to prove anything.” In a testament to what feelings that pressure can evoke, he adds that “seeking approval” is overrated. “The more you try to please others, the more you lose yourself.”
One person whose approval he clearly doesn’t have to chase is retired pop star mom Britney, who has often taken to her socials to shout praise from the rooftops about her son’s musical skills. Back in 2025, Spears posted a pair of Instagram clips of Jayden showing off his piano-playing and rap skills.
In one clip, Jayden plays an unidentified song on the piano while his mom walks through her living room and proclaims, “that’s sick!,” captioning the clip “WOW WOW WOW !!!”
Jayden, who made his official runway debut walking for Vetements in their spring/summer 2027 menswear show during Paris Fashion Week in June of this year, shared a few salient facts about his likes and loves in the interview. He noted that playing Minecraft reminds him of his childhood, that his most recent purchase was a Nord Stage 4 synthesizer, that he “can’t wait” to make music on and that “bro” is his most overused word.
He also shared that music is what he turns to to feel better, saying, “producing music or playing piano. Expressing myself through music has always been my best therapy.”
As the scion of pop royalty, Jayden seems to understand the importance of putting on a good face, admitting that he often fakes the idea that “I have everything figured out,” while adding that he would love it if people would stop asking him questions loaded with assumptions. “I’d rather people get to know me rather than assume they already do,” he said.
He’s also picked up some useful life skills from another obsession, anime series Dragon Ball , describing young warrior Son Goku as his 13-year-old North star. “In a way, I still look up to him because he always reminds me to try to surpass my own limits,” he said.
Spears and Federline, who were married from 2004-2008, also share older son, Sean Preston, 21, who also walked the runway at the Vetements show alongside his brother earlier this year.
