An international expert dialogue on water scarcity and desertification in the Caspian region is taking place in Elista, the capital of Kalmykia. The international scientific and practical conference, entitled “The Caspian Region amid Global Change and Water Scarcity: Initiatives and Ways to Enhance Resilience,” is being held at B. B. Gorodovikov Kalmyk State University. It brings together scientists, environmental experts and specialists from six countries: Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The Turkmen delegation is participating in the forum online.

The event is being held under the auspices of Russia’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education as part of efforts to implement the agreements reached by the heads of state at the Third Caspian Economic Forum in Tehran.

The conference addresses interconnected issues, including water scarcity, the adaptation of arid regions to changing climate conditions, the development of the North–South International Transport Corridor, the use of biotechnology in agriculture and environmental security. Participants emphasise that the Caspian Sea is a single, interconnected ecosystem and highlight the importance of coordinated action by the littoral countries in addressing the region’s environmental challenges.

The programme places particular emphasis on introducing innovative water purification technologies, combating soil degradation and monitoring the health of populations living in the Caspian coastal areas.

The development of academic cooperation and support for young scientists are also on the agenda. The Association of Caspian Universities and Research Centres has proposed establishing a dedicated scholarship programme for student research teams.

The proposals to be developed following the conference, along with agreements on joint scientific research, are expected to provide a scientific basis for preserving the biological resources of the Caspian basin and promoting sustainable development across the region.
