New Internet Speed Record Set

Chinese researchers have set a new data transmission speed record, achieving 3.2 petabits per second through a single optical-fiber cable. The breakthrough could support the development of high-capacity networks needed for artificial intelligence and 6G technologies.

Chinese specialists have achieved a data transmission rate of 3.2 petabits per second through a single optical fibre cable. The result has been recognised as a new record for data transmission capacity.

The experiment was conducted by specialists at the Peng Cheng Laboratory in cooperation with the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). They used a specially designed 24-core optical fibre cable measuring 10.3 kilometres in length.

According to the researchers, the achieved speed is equivalent to the capacity required to transmit more than 20,000 4K-resolution films in just one second. Earlier this year, the laboratory demonstrated a speed of 2.5 petabits per second in a previous test.

Experts note that the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies is increasing demand for high-speed internet infrastructure. This is because AI systems not only receive information but also analyse, process and deliver it to users.

Furthermore, the development of sixth-generation mobile communications technology, known as 6G, also requires the creation of communication networks with even greater data transmission capacity.
