Weezer: Photos From the Billboard Cover Shoot

Rivers Cuomo is reclining in a zero-gravity chair in a musty, windowless room deep within Tampa, Fla.’s Benchmark Arena — baseball cap on his head, a copy of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian and a pair of headphones beside him. Nearby, there’s a keyboard, a small drum kit and an acoustic guitar that his Weezer bandmate, drummer Patrick Wilson, periodically picks up and noodles on; a jar of peanut butter; a printed, official-looking setlist on a spreadsheet; and a paper bag labeled “clarinet books” in marker.
It’s flummoxing to consider that in just a few hours, this soft-spoken iteration of the Weezer frontman will be channeling the power-pop gods onstage for thousands of screaming fans. But this is Cuomo in power-saving mode, restoring the energy he burned onstage the night prior outside of Fort Lauderdale and didn’t quite recover on the four-hour overnight bus ride across the Sunshine State.
Yet at precisely 9:12 p.m. on this October night — just like every show night this tour — the lights will go down for Weezer’s headlining set, and Cuomo will transform. This is the precise time that, like clockwork, the lights have gone down for every show on the Weezer: The Gathering Tour, and it’s the time they will continue to go down for its remainder; if all goes as planned, Weezer will leave the stage at 10:53 p.m. on the dot.
A prerecorded video plays, setting up the show’s concept: A kid makes a wish for Weezer to play at his house, and when the quartet receives the magical transmission, it links up to answer the call. Finally, after the clip rolls, one of the great American rock bands strides onto the stage — which is decked out with a fake house, fence, yard and power lines to resemble the home from the video.
“Dearly beloved, we’re gathered here tonight,” Cuomo declares into his mic as the band revs up, “to celebrate a thing called Weezer!”
