Practical training seminars have been held in the Dashoguz and Lebap regions to promote the efficient use of water resources, protect pastures and ensure the environmental sustainability of agriculture.
The training sessions were organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, with support from the Global Environment Facility. The events took place in the cities of Dashoguz and Seydi and brought together farmers, environmental specialists and water management professionals.
The main objective was to introduce modern digital technologies into natural resource management in the Aral Sea region. Participants learned about the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the CROPWAT software, which is designed to calculate the water requirements of agricultural crops.
These digital tools make it possible to determine crop water needs more accurately, plan irrigation in advance and prevent excessive consumption of water resources.
The seminars also placed particular emphasis on pasture restoration and protecting soil from desertification. Practical solutions were presented for improving the condition of pastures around the Amu Darya State Nature Reserve and in northern Turkmenistan.
Experts provided information on various measures, ranging from repairing desert wells and livestock watering points to the targeted planting of drought-resistant vegetation that helps stabilize the soil.
The wider introduction of these technologies and environmental measures will help reduce pressure on the ecosystem of the Amu Darya basin and support the adaptation of regional agriculture to climate change.
