Four Big Grammy Questions to Follow Before the Awards
Billboard ·
From country's chances in the major categories to why the dancefloor might be the most exciting place to be, these conversations could define Music's Biggest Night.
Sure, music’s stars themselves define Grammy night each year — but so too do the looming questions surrounding the most contentious, mysterious and downright exciting showdowns that onlookers spend months debating, from well before nominations are even announced until the moment the lights go down.
The coming awards, set for Feb. 7 at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, should be no different. Ahead of the 2027 Grammys ceremony, Billboard ’s team of experts contemplated four of the biggest questions worth keeping an eye on in the coming months.
There’s the potential for, finally, a big country music showing in the marquee categories, fueled in large part by the historic success of Ella Langley’s juggernaut “Choosin’ Texas,” which in September broke the record for most weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 . In the hip-hop realm, Drake’s May release of three albums in a day didn’t quite relegate his 2024 battle with Kendrick Lamar to the past, but it certainly re-staked his claim as rap royalty — still, will his success with one of those projects, ICEMAN, melt his fraught relationship with the Grammys, where he hasn’t taken home an award as lead artist since 2019? When it comes to record and song of the year, two of the night’s most coveted prizes, which of today’s superstars might spice things up by submitting different songs for the two categories? And then there’s the sleeper category to watch that might just be one of the night’s most exciting (hint: its nominees could include Madonna, Robyn and even Tame Impala). Little is guaranteed on Grammy night, but chances are strong that good debates like these won’t go away any time soon — so to brush up on them, read below.
